SURGERY DAY

Preparing for Surgery

Patients with Special Needs

  • We schedule the patient for a General Anesthesia evaluation with our Anesthesiologist. Once the evaluation is completed, the anesthesiologist will then determine if it is safe to treat the patient in our facility or refer the child to a hospital setting.

Patient with Private Insurance

  • We will first schedule an appointment for a complete exam and x-rays with the dentist and ask that you bring any x-rays done in another office within the last 3 months. Our dentist will then determine a dental treatment plan to submit to your dental & medical insurance companies for approval.

Authorization Process

  • After submission, the authorization process can take up to 3-6 weeks for an approval or denial. The Medical Insurance Specialist will then contact you the day of the approval or denial.
We will also notify you of any financial responsibilities such as deductibles, co-pays, or percentages that are not covered by your insurance company for the surgery date.

Information Required for Authorization of Surgery

  • Referral from your child's Primary Dentist explaining in detail the treatment that was performed and reason treatment couldn't be performed on your child.
Medical & Dental Health Plan cards, as well as the child's social security card
Once you have the requirements listed above, please call our office to start the process immediately.
    • Patient Referral Form
  • Additionally, we will require a Pre-operative Physical form completed by the child's Primary Care Doctor. If the child has not had a physical within the last year, your primary physician may require an in office visit in order to complete the form.

Post-Anesthesia Instructions

A responsible adult must accompany the child at the time of discharge. Do not leave your child unattended for the first 24 hours after treatment. If public transportation is your mode for travel, the
child will not be allowed to leave unless he/ she has become alert and ambulatory.

Diet
Start by giving clear water. If tolerated, you may give the patient apple juice, 7-UP, or Gatorade. Please do not allow the patient to drink milk or citrus juices (orange juice or lemonade) for the
remainder of the day as these may cause nausea and vomiting. If teeth were extracted, patient must not use a straw for the following 3 days after treatment. Soft food is advised for the first day. Suggestions include applesauce, macaroni & cheese, mashed potatoes, and soups. If the patient is not hungry, do not force them to eat but encourage liquid consumption.

Pain or Fever
Muscle aches and a sore throat may occur similar to the flu. This is nothing to be alarmed about. It is very common after General Anesthesia and will normally disappear in 24 to 36 hours. Do not provide narcotic pain medication. Otherwise, the child may experience sedation and additional depression of breathing. Over the counter medications such as Children’s Ibuprofen, and Children’s Tylenol are acceptable. Be sure the child eats prior to taking medications. Aspirin is never recommended. The temperature may become elevated to 100°F for the first 24 hours. You may provide Children’s Tylenol or Children’s Ibuprofen. Please follow package directions. Drinking fluids will also alleviate this condition. Immediately notify the On-Call physician for temperatures of 102°F or above.

Activity
Child should not participate in strenuous physical activity for 24 hours or until the effects of the anesthetic have subsided completely. Judgment may be impaired during this time. Do not allow your child to play outside i.e., swim, and/ or ride a bike. The child is to remain indoors away from direct sunlight. Place a blanket on the floor for the child to sleep and observe him/ her closely. DO NOT  allow the patient to sleep on his/ her back as this may cause aspiration, in case of vomiting.

In Case of Nausea or Vomiting
1. Stop all liquids
2. Give the patient several saltine crackers dry.
3. Wait 30 minutes then proceed by giving 3 small sips of clear room temperature water.
4. Wait an additional 30 minutes and repeat steps 2 and 3.
5. If tolerated, then advance by giving soft foods and non-carbonated Coca-Cola. (Treat like
the flu).

Please call our office (408) 946-9800:
  • If vomiting occurs and persists beyond (4) hours.
  • If the temperature remains elevated beyond (12) hours.
  • If a rash develops or you suspect an allergic reaction

If you are unable to contact the On-Call physician, but feel that your symptoms warrant a physician's attention, please go to the nearest Emergency Room.
